What do you think about this week’s announcement that the new Obama Foundation will be funding a 50 city tour by comedian Kathy Griffin?
Foundation administrator Imam Mohammed Abdul Alzhak-Akeer announced Wednesday that the Foundation would fund a Summer concert tour headlining the female comedian as well as a cultural tribute to Islam that would visit multiple U.S. cities and military bases overseas.
Griffin who is fighting back against the abuse and “death threats” she has received in light of controversial images released earlier this week that showed the comedian holding up a bloody head resembling that of President Donald Trump.
“I am so happy to get this opportunity from President Obama,” Griffin said. “What’s happening to me has never happened in this great country. A sitting president of the U.S. … is personally trying to ruin my life forever. I have a right to make a living just as everyone else does.”
Griffin apologized for the “disturbing” photos, taken by provocative celebrity photographer Tyler Shields.
“I beg for your forgiveness. I went too far,” she said in a video posted to Instagram late Tuesday. “Even though Trump is a sick pig and his fans are stupid hillbilly freaks, I made a mistake and I was wrong.”
President Obamas asked Americans to submit recommendations to the Obama Foundation website for what the foundation can do. While based in Chicago, the projects created by the Foundation will take place “all over the city, country, and world,” Obama said.
“True democracy is a project that’s much bigger than any one of us,” Obama said. “It’s bigger than any one person, any one president, any one government. It’s important to fight for inclusive ideas like those of Ms. Griffin no matter how distasteful they may be to some.”
The details of the tour are still being worked out and will be announced at a later date.
