Star Wars Episode 7: The Force Awakens was released to home video this week to record sales.Fans have had mixed reviews of the much anticipated extra content and once again the film has faced criticism for it's portrayal of women and people of color.
The Reverend Al Sharpton has led a charge in the Black Lives Matter community to boycott the film on the grounds that it's portrayal of one of the main characters,an African-American Stormtropper, is racist.
Sharpton spoke in front of a packed house at the First AME Church of Los Angeles last Sunday, saying he planned “to start a movement” to draw attention to White film makers who "still see blacks as Uncle Toms".
"All the White people in this new Star Wars movie", Sharpton said, "are pilots, mechanics, cute little robots,Jedi Knights and whatnot except for the Black guy. He's a Stormtrooper and his job is a sanitation worker who cleans up after his White slave masters. Then he escapes and meets a White girl and all he wants is to get in her britches and then take off and run away again."
Sharpton feels the character is a stereotype of African Americans and portrays a bad image of young black males.
The film has not been without criticism from the right either. Tony Perkins of Family Research Council also called for a boycott on the grounds that the film may encourage young women to become lesbians. Both The Force Awakens and the new Star Wars stand alone feature, Star Wars Rogue One,to be released just before Christmas, have strong female leads. They feel this obfuscates traditions gender roles and promotes an LGBT agenda.
"Now that Big Business has been co-opted by LGBT activists, it’s not just demanding — but punishing — anyone who thinks the safety and privacy of our daughters is too much to pay for political correctness." Perkins told Fox News,” All these new Star Wars movies including the one coming out in December have female leads. There's no way the Jedi can procreate and save the galaxy if all the women are lesbians who hate The Force and refuse to stay home and take care of their families. Did anyone notice that the new bad guys are called The First Order? As in New World Order? Yes, Feminazis, you aren't fooling us for a second."
Last year, Fox News reported on a Twitter campaign to boycott the film on the grounds having a black lead character was a promotion of White genocide.
John Boyega, who plays Finn The Black Stormtrooper in the film and has been at the center of the controversy says he is dumbfounded by the criticisms.
"Are Americans all crazy or just stupid?", the Nigerian born actor said, ""I'm grounded in who I am, and I am a confident black man. A confident, Nigerian, black, chocolate man. This would never be an issue in England. Look at Doctor Who. All the Black guys on the show have hot White girlfriends and all the White guys are gay. I mean, that's real life. Come on."
J. J. Abrams, Producer of the films could not be reached for comments as he refuses to have an opinion on "all this silly crap."
Star Wars The Force Awakens is available in Blu Ray and DVD and it's sequel is set for release in 2017.
